Time-Saving Tips: GivingStudents Feedback on Writing

  • Write comments only on drafts where students can revise. If students cannot revise, try a rubric to remind students of the criteria for the grade they have earned.

  • Host small-group conferences to give students idea-level feedback.

  • Try minimal marking. Highlight lines where errors appear, but let students find and correct the error.

  • Incorporate and teach strategies for peer review so students benefit from each other's perspectives.

Did you know? When it comes to feedback, less is more. Most students can only process three pieces of feedback at a time!
